| Perhaps no other community in San Diego has made so major a transformation as the town of Oceanside. Oceanside founded in the 1800s to coincide with the arrival of the railroad between San Bernardino and San Diego. Much of the original land grant property was sold to the United States government in 1942 for the establishment of Camp Joseph H. Pendleton Marine Corps base.
Oceanside is the northernmost coastal city in San Diego County. With over 3 miles of beautiful coastline, a local harbor and seaside shops and restaurants, Oceanside feels like a vacation getaway all year long.
Mission San Luis Reyconstructed in 1798 was one of the most prosperous of all California missions. Fruit orchards and fields of cattle filled the area.
Oceanside is the home of Camp Pendleton, the worlds largest US Marine Corp Amphibious Training Base. Camp Pendletonhas its own military population of over 36,000 spread over 125,000 acres.
OCEANSIDE SHOPPING & ATTRACTIONS
Some of the most beautiful pristine beaches line the coast of Oceanside. On any given summer night you can find fires burning on fire rings along the beach and local residents gathered around sharing the beauty of this hidden paradise. Each June residents swarm to the beaches for the annual Beach Opening Celebration. The Summer Seagaze Concerts are held in the outdoor Amphitheater each year and nothing is as breathtaking as the Parade of Lights in Oceanside Harbor each December.
Oceanside Harbor can provide fun for the entire family. Sign up for a Whale Watching Tour, go fishing, or take sailing lessons all in one convenient location at the Harbor. Or for the more adventurous, rent a wave runner and sail over the water at lightening speeds.
With a culture centered around the harbor, where else would you find the California Surf Museumbut in downtown Oceanside. Pay a visit to this historic museum and learn all there is to know about one of San Diegos favorite pastimes.
A favorite spot in Oceanside is Heritage Park which centers around an idyllic Main street lined with many original Oceanside stores including the First General Store, the Blacksmith Shop and Livery Stable and the Old City Jail.
When its time for lunch or a quick snack, stop in at The Chart House, Jolly Rogers, The Monterey Bay Cannery or the Rockin Baja Lobsterall centrally located near the action.
Harbor Days in October is an annual festival complete with fun filled activities, craft booths, a homemade boat race, and the much loved Rubber Ducky Races.
With 3 beautiful golf courses, restaurants, tennis courts, and 6 miles of beachfront there is one thing for sure, you will never be bored in Oceanside.
Oceanside currently has a population of over 160,000 making it the largest city in Northern San Diego County. To keep up with the growing population 3,500 new housing units are under construction adding to the 55,000 units currently available. The city of Oceanside is served by five different school districts with the majority of students attending either Oceanside or Vista schools. Oceanside Unified School Districts 22,000 students are from diverse ethnic backgrounds. There are 17 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and two high schools as well as some small alternative education programs.
