Happening upon this lovely fertile valley they decided to name it Los Vallecitos de San Marcos (Little Valleys of St. Mark).

Just 33 square miles, San Marcos is located in the southwestern corner of California, in an ideal location in the heart of North San Diego County. San Marcos is located between the states two largest cities, Los Angeles, 90 miles to the north and San Diego, 30 miles to the south. In this location San Marcos is strategically placed to accommodate all types of businesses and trades.

Without the congestion of a major metropolitan area, San Marcos offers the beauty of rolling hills and valleys. Located at an elevation of 570 feet and only 12 miles inland from the coast, the natural beauty of this town is breathtaking. Bordered to the west by the sandy beaches of the Pacific and to the east by the Laguna Mountains and Anza-Borrego Desert, San Marcos rarely has a less than perfect day. Average rainfall is about 12 inches and average temperatures range from 47 to 85 degrees with the constant existence of cool ocean breezes. Fruit orchards, horse ranches and farmlands make it hard to believe that this suburban paradise is so close to urban civilization.

SAN MARCOS ATTRACTIONS

Cultural activity is never lacking in San Marcos. Community theatre, music, and fine arts organizations bring many renowned artists to this city. The Performing Arts Center at Palomar College and the CSUSM Library showcase not only student works, but professional works as well. The San Marcos Historical Society and Museum add rich bits of living history to the area.

Jacks Pond and Wildlife Discovery Center is a popular learning and hiking habitat, offering regularly scheduled hikes providing biological and geological overviews of the area and waterways.

For family fun make a stop at The San Marcos Community Center where both children and adults alike can enjoy a multitude of aquatics, recreation, dance and theatre classes or perhaps partake of league sports.

If its dinner and a movie you desire take a short ride to Restaurants Row where you will find a choice of cuisine all in one central location and in the middle of it all the Edwards Cinema stadium style theater.

With public beaches close by San Marcos residents and visitors can take advantage of water sports: swimming, surfing, boogie-boarding, water-skiing and boating for the entire family.

Perhaps you'd rather play a round of golf. In San Marcos you have the choice of three 18-hole golf courses within the city limits and over 22 additional courses within a 30-mile radius.

Palomar Community College CampusSan Marcos has so much to offer for people of all ages and income levels. With 51-year-old Palomar Community College, the largest in San Diego County, the newest member of California State Universities system Cal State San Marcos and the San Marcos Unified School district you can rest assured that a quality education is guaranteed. San Marcos Unified School District, which encompasses grades k-12, is an award-winning district with over seven Schools of Distinction Awards to their credit.
